Sydney, Australia.

Kata Tjuta (Las Olgas), Australia

Australia is a country on sale but nobody seems to be interested in buying it. On the north and on the south, houses and stores, everything is on sale. And the strange thing is that the ones that have the “For Sale” sign are not the ruinous business or the dilapidated houses, but the most luxurious flats located in the best areas. Apart form the crisis, the reason for so many businesses to be for sale is that here, everybody wants to be successful to leave. Just like everybody wants to leave, nobody wants to come in, not even the Third World country immigrants. Only a few Chinese people in Sydney, and that’s it. That’s why everything is so expensive in Australia. Since they don’t have cheap labour to cover the most basic services or the most simple professions, maids and waiters are people like us, locals who get their hands dirty in exchange for a salary that, without being anything special, it would be a fortune for a Filipino. The exception is a couple of Europeans working in fashionable bars to learn English, but the rest of them are just a bunch of modern Cocrodile-Dundees. Very chic, but also very embittered.

You can see that in the service they offer. It is awful. Probably it is the same reason why in this country not even the food is appetizing, yet one of the conquerors of this country had the name for that, Captain Cook. Their dishes are a mixture of all kind of flavours, without sense and without salt, always supersized. Anything works as long as they can continue accumulating fat in their huge bellies. What is most interesting is that they believe their cuisine is one of the best in the world. Whenever you open a newspaper it’s very easy to find information about the success of their gastronomy and their cooks. Let’s see… Have any of you ever seen an Australian restaurant? No. We didn’t either, but Australians are dreamers.

Here there is another example. For years we have been hearing that Sydney and Melbourne are very similar to Barcelona. We can only laugh when we think about it. We don’t even need to talk about Melbourne. This city is so small that they have a free tram that travels around the whole city in fifteen minutes. And Sydney, well, Sydney is the biggest deception we’ve ever seen. Their skyscrapers are so dull that didn’t even scrape a little bit of interest from us, their Hyde Park so small that homeless people have to wait on line to be able to enter, and their famous skytrain could be defeated in a race by a carousel. Their most famous attraction, the Opera House, is another story. When you see it on TV it looks big, but you could really fit it inside the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Calatrava was inspired by it for all his creations, but he exceeded the inspiration by far. The Auditorium in Tenerife or the city of Arts and Science in Valencia are so, so much better.
