Suggested itinerary: Peru in 16 days for independent travellers

Day 1: Arrival in Lima

Arrival at Lima International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Walk through the city centre. Night in Lima. 

Day 2: Lima

Walk through the historic centre of Lima, visiting the main square and the cathedral. Walk through the Miraflores district. Night in Lima. 

Day 3: Puno

Flight to Puno, Peruvian city placed on the banks of the Lake Titicaca. This lake, sacred for the Incas, is the biggest navigable lake in the world, and sits 3,812 m (12,500 ft) above sea level. It is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Night in Puno. 

Day 4: Copacabana

Transfer to Copacabana (Bolivia) by bus. Walk through Copacabana and visit to El Baño del Inca (the Inca's Bath) and La Horca del Inca (the Inca's Gallows). Sunset views from El Calvario. Night in Copacabana. 

Day 5: Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna

Boat trip to Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna (Sun and Moon islands). Trekking through Isla del Sol, where, according to the Inca legend, the Sun God was born. Return to Puno. Night in Puno. 

Day 6: Uros and Taquile Islands

Boat trip to visit the floating island of Uros. Boat trip to visit Taquile island and its rural community. Night in Puno. 

Day 7: From Puno to Cuzco: The Sun Route

Transfer by bus (Inca Express) to Cuzco, along the so called Sun Route (Pukara, la Raya, Sicuani, Raqchi and Andahuaylillas). Guided visits to the main archaeological sites on the route. Night in Cuzco. 

Day 8: Cuzco

Walking tour through this lively city, visiting the main museums, churches and squares. Night in Cuzco. 

Day 9: The sacred valley of the Incas

Transfer to Pisaq by bus. Visit to Pisaq Inca Ruins and to Pisaq Market. Transfer to Ollantaytambo by bus and visit to its ruins. Transfer to Aguas Calientes by train. Night in Aguas Calientes. 

Day 10: Machu Picchu

Trip up Machu Picchu by bus. Visit to the most famous and mysterious Inca ruins. Return to Cuzco by train. Night in Cuzco. 

Day 11: Iquitos

Flight to Iquitos, gateway city to all Amazon tours. Walk through the city centre. Night in Iquitos. 

Day 12: Amazon River

Transfer by boat to an eco-hotel in the Amazon River. Exploration of the area by canoe. Night in the Amazon River. 

Day 13: Amazon River

Morning trekking in the jungle. Rowing boat excursion to fish piranhas in the afternoon (with a little luck you will se pink dolphins on the way). Night in the Amazon River. 

Day 14: Amazon River

Transfer to an Amazon village, visiting their school, market and houses. Return to Iquitos. Flight to Lima. Night in Lima. 

Day 15: Nazca Lines

Visit to the Nazca Lines by plane. These long lanes, whose origin remains a mystery, represent different figures that can be identified from the air. Night in Lima. 

Day 16: Back home

Flight back home.
