Plan your trip with our itineraries

Siena and the north of Tuscany

Siena is a city you will love at first sight. Rather than a particular route, we suggest you wander its medieval streets. Of course, do not miss the Duomo and Piazza del Campo. The Smart Route will indicate good places to eat excellent Italian pizza and where to have the classical Tuscan appetizer. Night in Siena.

Siena:

Siena is the medieval city par excellence. Its palaces, its squares and its Duomo are equal to those of Florence. Apart from seeing the Piazza del Campo and the Duomo, you must check out the streets around these two places. Pay special attention if you coincide with the Palio (see special section "The Palio in Siena" on Practical Information).

Visit to the Siena Duomo:

  • Brief description: the Siena Duomo is one of the most beautiful and impressive cathedrals in all Italy. In its interior can be found works of art by artists as important as Michelangelo and Donatello. A visit inside the catedral is sufficient, although art lovers may find of particular interest the Battistero, the Crypt and the Opera Museum.
  • How to get there: in the Piazza del Duomo. Park your car outside the walls and walk there.
  • Cost: Usually tickets cost €4, except from 08/18 to 10/26 when the atonishing floor is uncovered and tickets cost €7. The OPA si Pass cost €13 from 03/01 - 10/31 and from 26/12 - 10/01, and €8 from 01/11 - 24/12 and from 11/01 - 28/02 (combined ticket to enter the Duomo, Opera Museum, Facciatone, Crypt, Oratory and Battistero). For tickets to the exhibits separately  check the official website. There is a 1€ fee for purchasing each ticket online.
  • Opening hours: Opening at 10:30, closing at 19:00 during all year, except from 01/11 - 24/12 that it closes at 17:30.
  • Length of visit: 30min if you only enter the cathedral, 2h in the case of a complete visit.

Lunch:

To have lunch, we recommend having a slice of pizza at the La Trofea pizzeria, in the Piazza del Campo which leads off the Via Rinaldini. They are delicious! 2.50€ per slice.

If you would rather sit down, you can try the Pizzería di Nonno Mede, in Camporegio street, number 21. Very popular with Italians, they have mouth-watering pizzas for 5-6€ and fantastic views of the Duomo.

Aperitivo in Siena:

Our recommendation is to go to the Piazza del Campo around 19.00 and have an aperitif in the purest Tuscan style. This consists of ordering a glass of wine which gives you access to a whole buffet of things to nibble. Our favourite place is Key Largo, in the Piazza del Campo (off the Via Rinaldini), as it has a small balcony with views onto the square. The cost of the aperitif is 4€ for each glass of wine.
