Visit Pisa:

Pisa

  • Brief description: the town famous for its leaning tower. The tower is in the Piazza del Duomo, and is the bell tower of the cathedral. It started leaning from when it was first built due to poor foundations and the type of ground it was constructed on. It is 56 metres high and leans by 4 metres from its central axis. You can go up the bell tower (294 steps) but the queues are huge and the admission cost high (18€) so we do not recommend it. The best thing is to see the tower from the outside.
  • How to get there: leave Florence and take the Autoestrade Firenze-Mare (A11) in the direction of Pisa. Once in Pisa, follow the signs for "Torre Pendente". Approx. 1h 20 min. There are a few toll booths along the way, but the charges are not high (less than a euro). Once there, if there is nowhere to park in the street, we recommend leaving your car in the Torre Pendente car park (2€/h) which is just opposite the entrance to the wall. There is also a train station (Stazione Centrale di Pisa) if you prefer to go by train.
  • Cost: entry to the city is free. To go up the tower costs = 18€. Cathedral = free. Baptistery= 5€.
  • Length of visit: 30-45 min if you are just looking at the outside and around 2 hours if you enter the tower, the cathedral and the baptistery.
  • Opening times: from 9h to 17h in winter (Nov-Feb) / until 19-20h the rest of the year.
