Visit Cannaregio Area:

Cannaregio

  • Brief description: Cannaregio is the most populated neighborhood of Venice. It has a very tourist street, the Strada Nova, which we recommend you avoid at all costs. But the rest of the neighborhood is very quiet, and although it has no major tourist attractions, it is super nice to walk in a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere. In this neighborhood lived famous characters such as Marco Polo, Tizziano or Tintoretto. And here too, the first Jewish ghetto in the world was established. Even today many Jews live in the area, being able to see many kosher shops and synagogues.
  • Recommended route: cross the Ponte Chiodo and walk through the pleasant Fondamenta Misericordia. Here, you can have a great ice cream at Bacaro del Gelato, or if you prefer, continue walking to the Fondamenta dei Ormesini (crossing the next bridge) and have a beer or glass of wine at Dodo Café, which has nice tables next to the channel. Crossing the bridge of Ghetto Vechio Street, you will reach Campo di Ghetto Nuovo, the center of the Jewish settlement in Venice. Here you can find a synagogue and the Jewish Museum of Venice. Continue along Ghetto Vechio street and you will enter the Jewish quarter. At the end of this street on the right is the Guglie vaporetto stop where you can take the boat back.
  • How to get there: from Fondamente Nove or Ca 'd'Oro vaporetto stops, you will have to wander around a bit until you reach the Ponte Chiodo.
  • Duration of the visit: 1h.
