Afternoon in San Sebastián:

Tarde en San Sebastián

Depending on the time of year, your interests and what kind of shape you're in, you can choose one of these activities for the afternoon (or you can do this in the morning and leave the visits for the afternoon, it's your choice):

  • Go to the beach: When the weather is nice, locals flock to the beaches. The most popular is La Concha Beach, where we recommend swimming at the end of the beach before heading over to Ondarretta (there aren't any rocks here and the water is cleaner). While Ondarreta Beach is the chicer of the two, rocks along at the shore make swimming a bit more difficult. The youngest and most progressive beach, and our favourite, is Zurriola. When the ocean isn't rough, the water here is the glassiest of the three.
  • Shopping: San Sebastián is teeming with great shops, apparent in the good tastes and stylish dress of the locals (check out the nattily clad kids and infants or the prams with radial tires!). Streets in the city centre are filled with shops, especially Calle Loiola and Calle Fuenterrabia. For more alternative shops, the Old City has a better offer.
  • Go to jai alai match: Jai lai is the San Sebastián sport par excellence, a game played on a pelota court in which players strike the ball with their hands. Variations such as "pala corta" (short bat) and "zesta-punta" (basket tip) exist, the latter being the most spectacular and different in comparison with the others. The largest pelota court in San Sebastián is Atano III, on Paseo de Anoeta 6 (bus 17, 21, 26 or 28). Still, if you're interested attending a match go to the tourist office (in front of City Hall or on the Boulevard) and inquire where one will be played that day.
