Stroll through the historic centre (I):

Paseo 1, Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, and is a pilgrimage city for Catholics. More than visiting monuments and museums, what's special about Santiago is walking through its narrow streets brimming with history and good atmosphere. Depending on where your hotel is, it doesn't really matter where you begin. Still, here are some streets and squares you won't want to miss.

Starting in Praza do Toural, go down Toural and turn left onto Rúa Nova. Continuing on Rua Nova, take a right on Salomé, where you'll see the small church Iglesia de Santa María Salomé, and then turn to right onto Calle Tras. Turn again to the right onto Cardenal Payá and continue until you reach Plaza de Mazarleos, where you'll find the Arco de Mazarelos (Mazerelos Arch). After that, you'll come to Praza da Universidade square, the location of the Faculty of Geography and History. Further on, take Travesía da Universidade and then Rúa das Ameas (on the left). This will bring you to Abastos Market. (10-15 minutes).
