Dinner in the Old City:

In San Sebastián you can always eat "pintxos" for dinner, but if your feet are tired and you want to eat sitting down, we recommend some of our favourite restaurants in the city. Dinner in San Sebastián-Donosti is not cheap, but the restaurants are so good it's worth trying at least one.

  • Aldanondo, Calle Euskalerría (in the Old City, though near the river). The actors and directors in town for the San Sebastián film festival frequent this establishment with lots of character. While the meat is excellent, they are known for their grilled fish. Ask what the fish of the day is. Both the "rape" (monkfish) and the "rodaballo" (turbot) are outstanding (40€ for 2-3 people). The codfish omelette is also very popular (7€), as is the tossed salad, which is prepared with products from the restaurant's own vegetable garden (you'll be reacquainted with the authentic flavour of tomato and lettuce for only 5€). In all, dinner will run you about 35-40€ per person. It's a good idea to make a reservation (943 42 28 52).
  • Gandarias (C/ 31 de Agosto 23). If you're in the mood for meat, this is the place to go. Get the "Chuleta Gandarias de Vaca Vieja" chop (35€ for 2 people) and a side of French fries (6€). Dinner will cost about 30-35€ per person. To be on the safe side, make a reservation at 943 42 63 62.
  • Juanito Kojua (C/Puerto 14): This is where to go if you want to try one of the most popular dishes in San Sebastián , baked Txangurro (spider crab) (21.50€). Also tasty here is another popular regional dish, Alubias (white beans) de Tolosa (10€). Expect to pay about 35-40€ per person. To make a reservation (recommended), send an email to kojua@juanitokojua.com or call 943 42 01 80.
