Eating Cochinillo (suckling pig) in Segovia:

Roast suckling pig is without a doubt the most popular dish in Segovia. It is cooked over a low heat and comes out so tender it can be split in two using the edge of a plate.

The two most famous places to eat suckling pig in Segovia are Mesón de Cándido (in Plaza del Ozoguejo) and Restaurante Jose María (Calle Cronista Lecea 11, one of the streets branching off from the Plaza Mayor). Both are good and equally expensive (40-45€ per person). The first is a classic, though the latter is gaining quickly in popularity. Whichever you choose, make a reservation at least 3 days in advance, especially on the weekends (Cándido: 921 425 911 or fill out the form on its website // Jose María: 921 461 111 or sending an email to reservas@rtejosemaria.es). Start with Judiones de la Granja (large beans cooked in the local style, 9-10€ per plate, serves 2) and order the suckling pig as a main course (22€ per person + 2-3€ with French fries). If you don't like pig, the suckling lamb chops at Jose María are exquisite (20€ per person). Accompany with the house red (16€ per bottle). Jose María harvests its own wine, and it's quite good.

If you can't get a reservation at either of these restaurants or they seem too expensive, we recommend Restaurante El Bernardino (located in the viewpoint where Calle Cervantes turns into Juan Bravo). They offer a set menu of Judiones de la Granja, suckling pig, dessert, bread and wine for 30€. You can make a reservation at their webpage.
